A blog post on adding texture to art journaling.
I made this a little while ago and put it to one side because I wasn’t sure what to do with it. However, I actually think now it is finished and so cute! I love making small items and especially themed things. I had a lot of little embellishments that went well with a sweets and cute theme – I love the tiny ice cream x
I’ve been obsessing with the idea of art journaling skulls for ages but finally just got my stash out and did it – and I really love what I have created!
The first page I used black primer and used my favourite Posca Pens to draw the skull and doodles. I added a few gems as well.
The second page I had a background already sprayed and drew a skull shape with a pencil first before going in with my pens again. I used some die cut flowers and punched leaves and hearts which I love.
These large bulldog clips are great for art journaling – as your journal gets fatter it can be tricky to get the fresh pages to stay flat. I highly recommend these!
With my usual sprayed background, I used a few different tapes and two images in this page for interest. Not sure how happy I am with the end result but I love these tapes and want to try new things with them. I guess I am still finding my style as it evolves. I never used to think of myself as a mixed media artist and when I did A-level fine art I was in the graphic design group which I never really liked. I was just never the kind of person to colour in the lines! But I actually think now, that that is part of my personality and creative style – chaotic, wild, expressive. These things lend themselves well to mixed media, and I love different textures and combining different materials to create something new.
This weekend I got a new friend for my room – here is Benson Honeydew! I have so many cacti now I am going to forget their names! Walking round the garden centre was nice, I’d like my own garden one day.
With all my art journal pages, I will start out with a very small idea and see where it takes me. I wanted to use a shimmery, light background and love how the pink and blue mixed here. The stars where made using a stencil and moulding paste, and once dry I painted them silver. I then added the foliage with stamps and black ink, used different punches for the flowers and cut out the bird.
So here is my latest journal page and I wanted to try something a little different with the image. I am really into collage and paint at the moment and also got my gel medium while I was making this page and I just love it! It is matte finish so really easy to draw and paint over while holding down the papers. You might not be able to tell from the picture but my art journal has got really fat so drawing on the left side was a little difficult. I like the idea of two different faces and want to do something similar again.
I’ve been on a creative mission to make a load of art videos while I am on holiday from work and this has given me some much needed motivation for my art journaling. For this page, I knew I wanted to try an uplifting colour palette so went for orange, yellow and pink in the background. I’ve found through trial and error the importance of the background to bring all the elements of the page together, and the last few videos I have made are experiments with texture and colour.
I had an idea of two birds flying in this page, and then incorporating a lot of different glitter, but it didn’t go the way I intended! Glitter is hard to work with, although I am sure there are techniques I don’t actually know about. I had red and gold glitter tubes – some were the little stars (which got everywhere!).
I thought I would share my first art journal page for December challenge – and I started with creating a silhouette page. I also filmed myself making my page which I will soon edit and put up on my YouTube channel – I’ve been really pushing myself with these creative endeavors!
