Sometimes – Art Journal Page

journal aprilWith my usual sprayed background, I used a few different tapes and two images in this page for interest. Not sure how happy I am with the end result but I love these tapes and want to try new things with them. I guess I am still finding my style as it evolves. I never used to think of myself as a mixed media artist and when I did A-level fine art I was in the graphic design group which I never really liked. I was just never the kind of person to colour in the lines! But I actually think now, that that is part of my personality and creative style – chaotic, wild, expressive. These things lend themselves well to mixed media, and I love different textures and combining different materials to create something new.

This weekend I got a new friend for my room – here is Benson Honeydew! I have so many cacti now I am going to forget their names! Walking round the garden centre was nice, I’d like my own garden one day.

A Small Journal Page… Plus Friend!

Another doodle type page, using sprays and paint pens. I find this kind of doodling really relaxing but have had some pains in my wrist recently which really sucks! I think it is just some RS from using a computer at work, but I do spend hours at a time doing this kind of page. Hope it goes away REALLY soon!

Victorian Curios Shadow Box

Here is my finished shadowbox. When creating it I had the idea of a Victorian Curios box in mind and the black really brings all the intricate pieces together. I think it is the little details that draw me to things like this. I am putting this up in my Etsy shop and am looking forward to my next media challenge.

Well Hello Sunshine!

This past week has been just crazy but gorgeous weather. All over the UK we have been experiencing what appears to be a heat wave, and when British people see a tiny bit of sun they go nuts! It has also been Graduations at work, which is still continuing this week so I have been super mega busy (I do get to do some overtime too which is good for money!). All I did last week was work, eat and sleep! However I had a lovely relaxing weekend to enjoy the sunshine, swim, do some art journalling and meet my friends for coffee and cinema 🙂

I went to a place near where I live that has a beautiful garden and wondered about with my camera, stopping to look at the different flowers and trees. It would be a great place to come and read a book. Lots of people were out sunbathing or walking dogs, and it made me really want a bike too!

Here are some of the photos:

Beautiful Shadow Box :)

Apart from a few small things, my new shadow box is now finished! I am a little torn between making it look ‘complete’ and putting too much into it.shadow

There is already a lot going on! I think this one reflects my personality really well 🙂 I may add some feet to raise it.

Finished Tray! How I Made It…

I thought it might be fun to make a blog on how I made my very first Printer’s Tray 🙂

I had to banish stressy thoughts about making it perfect, because I knew that would never help me begin! So first I arranged the little boxes where I wanted them and glued them into the tray. Then I covered the sides of tray with patterned paper. With a colour theme in mind I got a mixture of white, red, blue and purple arcylic paint and squished a few big blobs in different corners.

It looks a bit of a mess!

While I was a bit worried about how unblended the paint was, once I started to cover the backgrounds in different papers, the whole colour theme started to emerge. I used tissue tape round the box edges to bring everything together, although this doesn’t stay down that well. I used some pva glue to make it smoother and stick down, especially in the corners where it can get a bit fiddly.

Some of the papers I inked round the sides to give the boxes more depth.

I tried to balance the different colours and patterns of paper I used. I like to mix things up and not have them too symetrical. I was also going for a bit more a muted colour theme to tone down the painted background.

Then comes the fun part: embellishments! I just love adding embellishments to things! I had so many different things for this tray, but wanted to keep to a earthy nature theme as it is for my boyfriend’s parents. Otherwise it would probably be much brighter!

I just started to add pieces and knew I wanted some small prima flowers in one of the biggest boxes. I place a few key things like the light bulbs and metal flower, then just naturally built the whole thing round these. I used metal leaves in gold and bronze, buttons, wooden pieces, a few small bottles I filled with beads, a keyhole, an ornate plate, ribbon, small gift tags, hat pins, lots of glitter and gems 🙂

I also used loads of superglue, especially for the metal pieces.

And here is the finished piece!

A Sneak Peak of my Crafty Masterpiece!

This is what I have been up to recently, making a printer’s tray 🙂 it is almost complete and I love it! This is a gift but I will be making one for myself soon!

Daydreams and Compulsive Art x

I’ve been thinking about my inspirations lately and how I get ideas. Sometimes I have creative blocks and feel frustrated. If this happens I will get a little panicky that I will lose any talent I have, but then calm down and read or watch a film. I hadn’t realised though that my keen eyes are always drawn to things and store them in my brain for later. I like to keep images I find like magazine cut outs, postcards or interesting packaging, and only recently decided to put it in a scrapbook. I love making scrapbook style art, but this is more a place to put all my ideas, pictures, daydreams and thoughts.

As you can see I spent a while making the front, but the inside isn’t as pretty! That’s OK though because the purpose of my scrapbook is for reference and being free to do what I want on the pages without feeling like it will need to look like a finished piece.

I am going to add some more posts about inspiration, being self reflective in this sense is useful to understand how my mind works, the ways my creativity is stimulated and that a lull is sometimes a good way to step back and see how far you have come and relax with a good book and cup of tea.
