Mixed Media Mosaic Cuttlefish

I set myself a new project getting back to my love of mixed media. I decided to create a mosaic from my collection of beads, metal charms, paper flowers, seed beads and glass mosaics.

Mosaic art supplies

Other supplies included:

  • A3 piece of MDF
  • Mosaic Glue
  • Resin
  • Picture hooks for hanging
  • Pencil
  • Primer
  • Paint

One of my favourite sea creatures is a cuttlefish and I thought the textures created with all the pieces would make an interesting sea themed college, something I could hang in the bathroom.

Using some reference pictures, I sketched out a basic cuttlefish onto the wood and painted round it with Primer. When this had dried, I began picking out different beads and metal pieces I liked to start building up a pattern. Once I was happy with a few placements, the gluing commenced!

Mosaic Cuttlefish

I had a large translucent bead in mind for the eye, as cuttlefish have interesting eye shapes. To emphasise it I added smaller black beads around it.

After adding larger pieces I began filling in the gaps with a variety of seed beads. I wanted the head, body and fins to be well defined so I focused on making the body blue-green, the fins more gold and the head blue and red.

After finishing all the mosaic part of the piece, I painted around the cuttlefish with some blue Dylusions paint.

December Art Journal Challenge

I have wanted to get back into my art journaling having felt a little bit like I’ve neglected it and yet have loads of ideas to express and techniques to try out. So, my lovelies! I am setting myself an Art Journal Challenge for December. And this is what I aim to achieve:

College Workshop

Last weekend I went to a college workshop called Fierce Beauty with Derek Gores and I had a wonderful time! This was part of the Double Indemnity season they are doing at the moment in Manchester at the Cornerhouse. I was looking forward to it for ages, and knew this would be a great opportunity to push myself and explore a new medium. It was also wonderful to do art with other like minded people as I mostly do my projects on my own in my room – having some space was good too!

New Art Pages

P1010268

I have been so productive with my art journal, I think because I’m really excited to be using my new materials! This one looks quite dark, I think because I used so many things on the page, including grunge paste which I scrapped into, then dylusions sprays, acrylic paint, pen, and grunge paper I die cut into the flowers, butterflies and hearts. I am still quite happy the way it came out as I think it is quite interesting and gave me the opportunity to play with my art and enjoy the process much more.

I love the colours of this page (which I scanned in) and I used the grunge paste more sparingly with a stencil to get a different effect. I also made my second video of me making this which you can watch here:

Finished Tray! How I Made It…

I thought it might be fun to make a blog on how I made my very first Printer’s Tray 🙂

I had to banish stressy thoughts about making it perfect, because I knew that would never help me begin! So first I arranged the little boxes where I wanted them and glued them into the tray. Then I covered the sides of tray with patterned paper. With a colour theme in mind I got a mixture of white, red, blue and purple arcylic paint and squished a few big blobs in different corners.

It looks a bit of a mess!

While I was a bit worried about how unblended the paint was, once I started to cover the backgrounds in different papers, the whole colour theme started to emerge. I used tissue tape round the box edges to bring everything together, although this doesn’t stay down that well. I used some pva glue to make it smoother and stick down, especially in the corners where it can get a bit fiddly.

Some of the papers I inked round the sides to give the boxes more depth.

I tried to balance the different colours and patterns of paper I used. I like to mix things up and not have them too symetrical. I was also going for a bit more a muted colour theme to tone down the painted background.

Then comes the fun part: embellishments! I just love adding embellishments to things! I had so many different things for this tray, but wanted to keep to a earthy nature theme as it is for my boyfriend’s parents. Otherwise it would probably be much brighter!

I just started to add pieces and knew I wanted some small prima flowers in one of the biggest boxes. I place a few key things like the light bulbs and metal flower, then just naturally built the whole thing round these. I used metal leaves in gold and bronze, buttons, wooden pieces, a few small bottles I filled with beads, a keyhole, an ornate plate, ribbon, small gift tags, hat pins, lots of glitter and gems 🙂

I also used loads of superglue, especially for the metal pieces.

And here is the finished piece!

This is what I have been up to recently, making a printer’s tray 🙂 it is almost complete and I love it! This is a gift but I will be making one for myself soon!
