Something Close To My Heart…

5

I decided to write a post about something I care deeply about and that is Human Writes, an organisation that befriends prisoners on Death Row in America through letter writing. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and knew someone who had done it before and described how much she got from it.

Human Writes is a long established organisation founded for the purpose of befriending prisoners on Death Row in the USA. The organisation does not campaign against the death penalty as such as its main remit is friendship through letter writing.

Human Writes pairs you with someone you will have similar interests in and my friend loves art and books. We have been writing for almost a year now and he has sent me a number of stunning drawings as well as some heartfelt letters. This isn’t about what the person may have done and their punishments (I do not agree with the death penalty), but about offering another human being some kind of hope and friendship in an extremely dark and desolate place. My friend is 30 years old and has been on Death Row for 9 years. Before that he had a troubled childhood and spent a lot of time in and out of Institutions. But our friendship is not built on the past, I only know him through our letters and I have gained as much from writing to him as he has from me.

I am posting one of his images here xSantiago

I will write to them when I turn 18 πŸ˜› you could send him one of my drawings πŸ˜‰ from the cherub :3

  2. This is a wonderful thing you are doing! To reach out to someone and care despite their past mis-deeds, reaches the epitome of our human experience in my opinion. We are all made of dark and light and, especially when we are young, can act out of the hurt and anger from painful childhoods. No one is born bad – life experiences at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect us can make us so. To love the human being who now faces the consequences of their actions is a truly great thing! I do not believe in the death penalty either – it has always seemed to me to be the height of stupidity that the law [we] would say ‘It is wrong to kill’ and then kill. Thank you for sharing his beautiful art work too.

  3. What a blessing your letters must be to that person. πŸ™‚
